Propose a Feature

From Kmaps

Support for the Sun's J2ME platform. Many handheld devices, such as the Tapwave Zodiac are not supported by the IBM JVM.

8/25/06 I know it has been asked before, and you probably have a point when it comes to mobile phones with low-res screens, but I would love for there to be an option to view sattelite or hybrid maps. I'm in Canada at the moment, using a Palm TX (with it's higher-res screen), so it works great now, but when I go back to Australia next year I would like to keep using this great program. I know the roads in my home city well enough to not need names and such hehe.

8/1/06 Similar to request 7/7/06, will there be support for Australian maps?

7/23/06 Feature requests:

  • Browse map while offline. Is it really necessary to do a search before you can browse the maps you had just downloaded a few days ago?
  • Threading? Is it possible to allow panning of the image while tiles load?
  • Cancle tile load. For those times when you press the wrong place and then have to wait for a download.
  • Resume to last map. If you get a call during a map browse you have to start all over again.
  • Saved maps. Ability to bookmark a map so one could go back to it easily. Like searching but offline.

7/19/06 Is there a way to select an "I am here point" from a user defined marker on the map? I see we can create routes with user defined markers, but don't see any option to do anything else with the markers. Sometimes, you can define your position better than an address search.

7/7/06 Will there be support for German and Korean maps? Can I at least download them from the web to my SD-card and use it with KMaps in offline browsing mode?

3/7/06 Thanks for getting 1.7 out! I am soooo happy to have my tool back!

1 request: I tried to download the update from my Treo 650 Verizon w/ 5.5 meg free. Tried to save to Applications. Not enough memory. Downloaded prc file from this site fine, but when I'm away from my PC, could there be a way to restart the update OTA?

Thanks again for fixing the directions error! This is the greatest piece of software for road warriors ever!

The program seems to create a ton of J9RMS files. On my Treo 650 space is limited. Is there a way to clean these up once the program is not in use? like a clear button to clean out those that are no longer needed? I am seeing each time I do a search or access the program more and more of these files are created taking up more limited space.

Edit this page to talk about features you would like to see in KMaps.

Responses (September/October 2005)

Ability to have all maps automatically cached on my card. I don't want to have to "save" them.
So any maps not specifically saved would enter this cache. Once the space limit is reached, oldest map pages are removed. The limit would never affect explicitly saved maps.

Automatic cache supported in 1.5. KMaps saves the images in "gmaps" folder on your SD. You control the size by deleting gmaps subfolders from time to time if you think you're running out of space. You can also delet the whole gmaps folder if you want and start with 0 cache.

Support for Google Earth? At least for .kml files and the 'network links' they contain?

This is a bit too much of a memory requirement for a small device to handle.

Support for satellite and hybrid images. Only a small portion of the world is covered by Google Maps, but satellite imagenary seems to cover the whole globe!

I am still to be convinced that sattelite images provide a value on a mobile device. Some of devices e.g. Treo 600 have low resolution that can't really render them in usefule way... On the other hand, satellite images may be good to pull out in front of PocketPC users, so I'll think about that...

Satellite images, that is what I mean with Google Earth, what's the difference? It takes lot of memory but some Tungsten devices have much memory, but it would be very processor intensive...

Release the source code, let us help make KMaps even better!

I really want to release KMaps API, which I think is much more important at this point. KMaps API, released as Java library, will enable developers to integrate KMaps into their applications and enable them to use KMaps to display their data on the Map, KMaps way. So, I will really code this in API style and you will soon be able to write the code and include KMaps into your J2ME application and use it for Mapping and Searching purposes. I am in the process of extracting the essential KMaps services into API and deattaching them from the rest of the KMaps platform as it is not really API friendly now. That is the direction where I want to get KMaps to and that is what I would like to see being a Java developer myself, because we need to see more Location Aware Mobile Applications out there and benefit from the creativity of the J2ME community. Releasing the source code of the whole KMaps at this point won't be beneficial as it would proliferate the versions of KMaps and stop the API idea in its infancy. Once we get the standard KMaps API extracted, then the source code is not an issue as everyone would have to code against the standard API and help improve it in a standard way (so everyone moves into the same direction). In summary, if you are J2ME developer, your applications will become interesting soon and you will be able to use a lot of Location and Mapping Services based on KMaps. Be a bit patient for API will soon come out...

Support for 320 x 480 screens line on my T3

Java doesn't support this resolution on T3.

Are you sure? I read that Opera (Java) would run with IBM WebSphere (J2ME environment) with 320x480 on a T5, what's the difference?

GPS Device support with realtime tracking! Text-to-speech nav prompts?

GPS is coming soon. I am looking at LBS and Sprint Mobility as well...

Integration with Directory Assistant - bringing up a KMaps map from DA would be useful. Right now I have to memorize the results from the DA query then retype it into KMaps.

KMaps can't make the other applications to call it. Those applications have to do that themselves.

The ability to copy/paste the directions (or email them) would be great. Scenario: someone asks me how to get to my office or for directions. I proudly show them KMaps - get the directions - email to them (or copy/paste into my email).

Added in 1.5 as of 09/12/2005. You can now email the directions by clicking on "Send to EMail" menu item on Directions screen.

Tilt view like TomTom

KMaps works with Google Maps. They don't support tilted view.

Ability to map an address directly from the Palm "contacts" database. (do a "lookup" from within kmaps and then automatically get the map without having to type the address again.)

I will add "Map from Contacts" soon

Smooth dragging. Map moves while you drag, like Google Maps, and not just when you let go.

Tried this one, didn't like it. Was very confusing. it makes sense on a super fast connection when you don't care how many tiles are being loaded. I found myself loading too many tiles even without wanting it. Will think about this though.

Palm menu button always works. You shouldn't need to turn on a setting to get it, and you shouldn't need to have a toolbar on the bottom as part of the same setting.

Thanks for the advice. Fixed in 1.5

Background loading tiles. Switches to map mode after the first tile loads. Other tiles load in the background and the map remains usable while it happens. Especially important for...

...Auto-Filling Map. (Optional since not everyone has unlimited data plans.) Whenever a part of the map is empty (showing brick) it loads that tile automatically in the background so the screen is always full. Largest empty spaces visible fill in first.

Yes. For some reason, I couldn't make loading of images in background to work. I will still try though. Didn't have time to look properly at this issue. This may be a huge performance improvement.

Signal Strength Indicator, in top right corner, showing if connected and how strong the connection is.

Can't do it in Java

A disconnect menu option, So i can turn of the data access. Kmaps doesn't always drop the connection when i exit it, so i got to go in to blazer or versamail and choose disconnect from the menu.

KMaps always closes connection properly. Not sure why Treo keeps the connected icon. Must be that Java doesn't inform Treo properly about this closure.

Note: I think the above user is referring to the acutal data service connection, not to be confused with the connection made by the program. The data service connection will remain open after a successful connection, and remain on until it idles out, or is given a command to disconnect (from preferences->networking, or otherwise capable client).

When typing a new search address, it would be much easier if i could tell if the caps or option lock is on.

Will do this.

Sometimes I make a typo when putting in my search. If I select a previous search from "Repeat a search" and try to correct it, you are always submitting my previous search. Could you put it on the search line without submitting? Or follow the "Submit when Default Location Selected" checkbox... Not a big deal...

Yes. I had this issue myself several times. Will do it.

Sometimes i get stuck on the recieving screen, it download some and then stops, i think this is because of the signal strength being to low. If you could put a stop or cancel button so it would be possible to abort recieving, like in blazer, would be great.

Would be nice to be able to access Location Services directly from mapping screen.

I will add this on the menu

I noticed that when i try to select an address from my contacts, only the business address can be selected not the home address. It would be great if i coud choose either address. Contacts that only got a home address don't even appear on the list.

Right. This is really an omission. I will fix this.

How about the abilty to access a proxy? I use my Treo 600 via T-Zones, and Blazer works fine when I put in the correct Proxy info for my carrier.

You should be able to set up proxy. Take a look at KMaps installation instructions.

Any chance of adding the ability to browse cached maps offline (when no data connection is available)?

Will there be support for German and Korean maps? Can I at least download them from the web to my SD-card and use it with KMaps in offline browsing mode?

Will there be a way to clear/delete the "repeat a search" drop down list?

How about an "Add New Contact From Search Result" Option, always have to memorize and create one manually now... 98276954232394380459860

700p, The menus seem to be a bit screwy on the 700p the up and down arrow don't work, I can work round it by uising the touch screen.
