Specifying Default Locations

I live in Boston and that is where I use KMaps the most of the time. All my searches end with "Boston MA". To reduce the typing, KMaps lets me specify Boston MA as my Default Location and will automatically append it to the end of my search term. Moreover, KMaps lets me specify more Default Locations in addition to Boston MA (e.g. New York, various zip codes...) and use them when I am on travel or outside my default area. Default Location may be any text that KMaps will append at the end of your search term. It may be zip code, combination of city, state and zip code...

Default Locations are defined in Settings. On the menu select Help then Settings. Scroll down to the Default Location text box. Enter your Default Location there. If you want to specify more Default Locations, separate them with & (e.g. Boston MA&New York&Charlotte NC). Since the Default Location is usually at the end of your search term, you may request KMaps to automatically submit your search term as soon as the Default Location is selected. Automatic submission is controlled by the checkbox below the Default Location text box. If checked (and it is by default), KMaps will submit your search term as soon as you select Default Location on a Search Screen without the need to press Go button.

Once on the Search Screen, enter your search term and then select your Default Location from the drop down of available Default Locations below the Search text box.

Search Term History

KMaps remembers your last used search terms and lets you resubmit them again. The number of search terms maintained in Search Term History is controlled by Settings and the default is set to 10. You can access items form your Search Term History when on Search screen by selecting them from the Search Term History drop down. When selected, the item from the Search Term History drop down will be submitted automatically. Bla bla bla

Local Search with KMaps

You can use Local Search to fine grain your search by searching for addresses, businesses and landmarks nearby some specific location. Local Search is always performed relative to some starting location. So, you first need to specify some generic location, then search locally to that location. You can search locally to any location. For example, you can just type zip code e.g. 02118, or street intersection etc. and then, when presented with the search results, select "Search Local To This Place" from the menu. Then type what you are searching for e.g. Tapas Bar, or Home Depot.
